There are 2 landfills at issue here, 1. Chiquita Canyon Landfill (located at 29201 Henry Mayo Dr, Castaic, CA 91384) and 2. Sunshine Canyon Landfill (located at 14747 San Fernando Rd, Sylmar, CA 91342). Residents residing near the Chiquita Canyon Landfill and Sunshine Canyon Landfill in California are grappling with significant disruptions caused by persistent and overwhelming odors. These sites have caused significant pollution, releasing foul smells and contaminating local water sources, leading to negatively impacting the daily lives and health of the communities in and around Granada Hills (91344 and 91394), Porter Ranch (91326), Sylmar (91392), Santa Clarita (91382 and 91383), Newhall (91321 and 91322), Valencia (91355), Stevenson Ranch (91381), Hasley Canyon/Hasley Hills (91384), Val Verde (91384), Castaic (91310, 91384), Williams Ranch (91384), North Bluffs (91384), and Saugus (91350, 91351).

The situation has spurred the South Coast Air Quality Management District to call for urgent corrective measures. Waste Connections, responsible for overseeing the Chiquita Canyon Landfill, has received directives to enforce advanced odor control strategies, such as optimizing gas flares, providing regular updates, seeking expert consultations, and intensifying monitoring efforts. Similarly, Browning-Ferris Industries of California, Inc., a Republic Service company, responsible for overseeing the Sunshine Canyon Landfill has failed its neighborhood of residents in allowing the dangerous conditions to exist. The noxious odors, mainly stemming from dimethyl sulfide emissions in aged landfill sections, have severely disrupted the community's daily lives and health, prompting reports of headaches, nausea, asthma, and nosebleeds. The situation became so dire that the EPA, a federal agency, stepped in to conduct a probe of the landfill in question.
